eff.y.bee Fall 2018 | Chinatown Dreams

Posted on 30 September 2018

A note from our Founder Alyssa:

Our Fall collection and look book is extra special and dear to my heart. It was inspired by a vintage photograph of my mom from 1988 taken in Chinatown the week she had just immigrated to the United States from China - full of big goals and big dreams. This look book, "Chinaown Dreams" is an ode to my mom, my Chinese culture, and the city that has my heart (NYC) where my own little dream has grown.

In April 2018, I spent two weeks in China visiting family spending most of the time in Emei, a small village where my grandma lives. Basking in the countryside, exploring the town, and taking in the rich colors deeply inspired the designs and color story in our Fall collection. Scroll below for some scenes from the photo diary from my trip and learn more about the meaning behind each piece. Click the images to shop!

Red

Vibrant red symbolizes good fortune and joy in Chinese culture. It's thought to bring good luck and a good future while scaring away evil and bad fortune. It's used in weddings and the color of Chinese New Year.

We incorporated red coral into our fall collection, the stone of passion, love, and prosperity.

Lucky 8

The number 8 is the luckiest number in Chinese culture because  (the character for 8) sounds like  (fa), which means “wealth”, “fortune”, and “prosper”. Our lucky 8 collection combines semi-precious stones with 8 delicate gold filled beads to symbolize this token of good luck. Wear these necklaces and bracelets and set 8 goals or wishes you have on each bead. Wear them till each comes true!

Asian Fan

The traditional Chinese fan is an artistic symbol of literari, social status, and beauty. We added it to our collection to symbolize staying inspired and finding the beauty all around you.

Yellow & Gold

Yellow/Gold are considered the most beautiful colors in Chinese culture. The Chinese saying Yellow generates Yin and Yang, implies that yellow is the center of everything. Yellow symbolizes neutrality and good luck and is sometimes paired with red in place of gold.  Yellow was the color of Imperial China and also represents freedom from worldly cares.

Gold represents fortune and wealth in China's pillar of destiny. During Chinese New Year, gold coins or bars are often given as gifts or purchased in hopes of bringing prosperity to the new year.

The Lotus Flower

In Buddhism, the lotus flower is symbolic of purity of the body, speech, and mind. It also blossoms through thick mud, symbolizing the beauty that can come from persevering through challenges. This photo was taken from a pond behind my Uncle's house in Chengdu, China.

Vibrant Green

In Chinese culture, green jade represents  the virtues of compassion, courage, justice, wisdom and modesty. Chinese women will often wear a green jade bangle on their wrist. We incorporated deep green malachite and jasper to symbolize this beautiful color. Malachite is known as the stone of transformation, bringing energy and focus to new growth.
